Authentically you! It’s the right thing to do.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) is one of my favorite composers. I’m listening to him now as I write. The Suite for Unaccompanied Cello No 1: Part 1, to be specific. This piece of music is deep, mysterious, light, and uplifting.. as if it’s telling a story. I believe he is telling a story.. his story. An authentic story from his deepest, most profound experience as a human.

I have been playing and studying piano for most of my life and have learned and practiced many of Bach’s works. As many piano students are expected to play classical music.. I preferred it. I still do. I love that classical music, like art,  is open to interpretation.

Imagine a world without Bach.. without Beethoven. Without Mozart, Debussy, Chopin, Tchaikovsky.. Music evolved throughout the years because of each individual composer’s impact upon it. We can follow the pathway of these masters from decade to decade, each of them playing their own role in introducing new sounds, rhythms, textures.

We can hear the music evolve from Renaissance to Baroque, and so on. Now we hear much different music, with words, even! We now enjoy the sounds of Eddie Vedder, Michael Jackson, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley.. all unique artists / composers. As listeners, we enjoy a vast, somewhat endless selection of music.

Why do we enjoy this privilege?

Because they DARED to be authentic! They agonized, they emoted, they practiced, they won, and they FAILED. These musical legends presented themselves to the world exactly as they were. They endured the criticism and pleasured in the amazement of their audience. As Bach shared the Cello suite with the world, they listened.. and other musicians were inspired. They are STILL inspired by music created centuries ago. Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly revolutionized how we listen to music.

How does this relate to me.. the artist?

It is your privilege and also your responsibility to share YOU with the world. There is genius inside of you that the world deserves to see. Consider the possibility that you have something within you to share that NO ONE else has within them. Imagine what COULD exist in this world in art, music, construction, web, design, literature, if more people were brave enough to just share what is within them. We are too often afraid of what other people think. We are scared of rejection, scared of failure. But we WILL FAIL. We WILL be rejected!

Image result for Leonardo Da VinciLeonardo da Vinci was underappreciated in his artistic pursuits. He actually only sold 2 paintings while living. This is the guy who painted the Last Supper and the Mona Lisa! His impact on the world was significant and he didn’t even know it yet. But what would the world look like without his inventions, his art? Let me remind you.. People thought this guy was nuts.. like certifiably crazy. (sidenote: He was a little crazy) But his genius still lives on today… because he shared it.

I urge you to share the crazy genius within you. Make it a practice to share ideas publicly that aren’t polished, perfect, or even pretty. You might just be on to something amazing. BE YOU! Don’t try to be someone else. I want to see more of you. 🙂
